John David Washington was born and raised in the Toluca Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. He is the eldest of four children born to actor Denzel Washington and actress-singer Pauletta Washington. His full first name is John David. At seven, he appeared as a student in Spike Lee's 1992 film Malcolm X, which featured his father in the title role.

John David Washington attended Campbell Hall School in Los Angeles, earning letters in football, basketball, and track. He graduated from high school in 2002 and went on to graduate from Morehouse College in 2006.
