SGS was established in Rouen, France, by Henri Goldstuck, a young Latvian immigrant who recognized the potential at one of the country’s largest ports and began inspecting French grain shipments.

In 1878, international traders in London representing countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Baltic region, Hungary, the Mediterranean, and the United States formed the London Corn Trade Association. The aim was to standardize shipping documents for exporting nations and establish clearer procedures for resolving disputes related to the quality of imported grain.
