Wipro was founded on December 29, 1945, in Amalner by M.H. Hasham Premji as Western India Vegetable Products Limited, specializing in cooking oils. After Hasham Premji passed away in 1966, his son Azim Premji left Stanford University to become chairperson at 21.
In 1977, The company changed its name from Western India Vegetable Products Limited to Wipro Products Limited followed by Wipro Limited, a syllabic abbreviation of the original name, in 1982.
