According to the data from Wikipedia, In the lead-up to the 1994 general election, South Africa's former homelands, known as Bantustans, were reintegrated into the country, increasing the number of provinces from four to nine. The borders of Natal and the Orange Free State were kept, while the Cape Province and Transvaal were split into three provinces each. Additionally, the North West Province was created, covering areas from both of these former provinces. The twelfth, thirteenth, and sixteenth amendments to South Africa's Constitution altered the borders of seven provinces.
