Jo Jung Suk was born in Banghwa-dong, Gangseo District, Seoul, South Korea, where he attended the Theater department of Seoul Institute of the Arts on a student loan, but after his father died in 2000, Jo's widowed mother became fully dependent on him.
He was excused from military service because of family circumstances and left school before graduating to begin earning money through musicals. His professional acting debut came in 2004 with The Nutcracker.
